Crackers fill out lunch boxes, complete charcuterie boards and tide us over between meals. This simple snack is such a staple in many of our day to days that it may be a priority for you to reach for healthier ones. But the number of options in the aisle can be overwhelming, and it can feel difficult to parse out which crackers are more nutritious than others.
Generally, crackers are small and therefore somewhat portion-controlled, but some varieties contain more fat, sugar and salt than you might expect. Healthier crackers tend to be lower in sodium, made without hefty amounts of oil and include good-for-you ingredients such as nuts, seeds, dried fruit and spices that add flavor, vitamins, minerals and fiber.
To ease the analysis paralysis, we asked dietitians which ones they bring to the checkout line.
Meet my family’s new cracker obsession. Made with organic ingredients including a blend of whole grains, flax, sesame, honey and olive oil, these sturdy, extra crispy crackers are the perfect vehicle for dips and make a lovely addition to any charcuterie board. They come in a variety of tasty flavors, including some limited-edition flavors, but the Multigrain Za’atar is a must try.
“I’m a huge fan of Mary’s Gone Crackers – you can’t go wrong with any of their varieties,” shares Samantha Cassetty, MS, RD, plant-forward nutrition and wellness expert and co-author of Sugar Shock. “They’re gluten-free, so they’re suitable for many eaters, they’re crunchy and delicious, and they’re made with whole grains and seeds. These are as close to homemade crackers as you’re going to get in a package! I love them with hummus, guacamole, egg or tuna salad, or cottage cheese dip.”
Reminiscent of all your favorite classic round crackers, these crackers are made with wheat flour and sprinkled with sea salt. They also are free of high-fructose corn syrup and contain no artificial flavors or colors. “I’m all about the classic rounds, which I enjoy as a snack topped with cheese or crumbled in soup,” says Toby Amidor, MS, RD award-winning nutrition expert and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Health Shots. If you’re looking for other flavors, they also have stoneground wheat, garlic and herb and sour cream and onion.
“One of my favorite types of crackers and those which have such creative flavors that I’m excited to eat them!” says Amidor. Maine Crisps are made with buckwheat and come in flavors like savory fig and thyme, cranberry almond and olive and za’atar. Amidor enjoys them with hummus, peanut butter, cheese or as is.
If you’re looking for a large cracker to pile high with toppings, this is the one for you according to Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN, nutrition expert, author and mom of four. “They’re sturdy and round and work well with everything from tuna salad to cheese and a fried egg to spinach-artichoke dip. They are so quick to grab and are helping me eat regularly with my chaotic work and baby-care schedule!”
Some more love for Wasa with their line of traditional crispbreads. “These crackers are nutritious, made with minimal ingredients, and have a nice crunch,” says Melissa Mitri, MS, RD, Nutrition Writer and Owner of Melissa Mitri Nutrition. Not only are they sturdy and hold up to thicker dips and salads, but they also have plenty of nutrition to offer. “Many of their varieties are very low in sodium, which is hard to find in a cracker. Many of their crackers contain whole grain or whole wheat as the first ingredient, making them richer in important nutrients like fiber and B vitamins,” adds Mitri.
For generous portions, Cassetty also reaches for Simple Mills crackers. “I love them because the ingredient list is very simple and natural. Plus, you get 17 crackers in a serving, which feels very satisfying. These are an excellent crunchy alternative to chips and pretzels for crunchy, savory snackers.”
Born in California, these handmade artisanal crackers are now available nationwide. Cult Crackers are crunchy, addictive little squares that are grain-free, gluten-free and made with a mix of cassava flour, a variety of seeds, coconut oil and Himalayan Sea salt, yielding four grams of both fiber and protein per serving. Spread soft cheese or a dollop of fig jam over them.
These thin and airy crackers, which are wheat-free and gluten-free, have a nice crunch and slight nutty flavor that isn’t overwhelming. They contain less sodium than many other varieties of crackers, not to mention a fairly short list of ingredients.
