The cupcake is too big, said no one ever.
Cupcake fiends and dessert-lovers will appreciate the nationwide launch of the Colossal Cupcake, a hefty four-pound pastry conceptualized by New York-based CRUMBS Bakeshop, now available at bakeries within Kroger Family Stores in 22 states across the country.
Weighing in at approximately 60-ounces, or just under four pounds, a single Colossal Cupcake can feed 15 to 20 people. No doubt it is a whimsical and fun alternative to a traditional sheet cake or a dozen regular-size cupcakes, but with its bargain price tag of $24.99, the dessert serves as an economical choice for birthday parties and celebrations of the colossal caliber.
Not surprisingly, the Colossal Cupcake has gone viral on social media with content creators taking to TikTok to showcase the journey to try and locate one in their local markets. And, then showing off its mammoth size and proportions.

Those who do spot one in a bakery case can opt for one of two indulgent flavors. The vanilla birthday cake features a classic vanilla confetti cake iced with CRUMBS vanilla frosting that reveals a piñata-style confetti sprinkle middle when cut open. As a chocolatey alternative, the cookies and cream cupcake pairs chocolate cake with a cookies and cream-infused buttercream filling, topped with CRUMBS vanilla buttercream and decorated wholly with chunky cookie pieces.
If the sweet taste and giant portion of a Colossal Cupcake isn't enough to satisfy, this one comes with a cool comeback story. The supermarket launch doubles as the momentous return of CRUMBS Bakeshop, the brand founded in 2003 by husband-and-wife team Mia and Jason Bauer, who were at the head of the gourmet cupcake craze of the early aughts. It grew to become a $66 million national brand with 50 stores that sold more than one million cupcakes per month.
All was well until 2012 when a change of hands led to the closure of all CRUMBS stores. But, the Bauers weren’t finished with their bakeshop dreams. A decade later, in 2022, the couple reacquired the brand for a measly $350 (yes, $350) and are dominating its exciting comeback. In the years since the reacquisition, they have been working to rebuild the brand from the ground up. On this go around, they are focusing on elevating supermarket bakery goods with their premium and cost-attractive options.
“Our model has evolved, but our mission remains the same,” says Mia Bauer. “We launched CRUMBS to bring back the magic of neighborhood bakeries, and now we want to bring that same premium quality to local supermarkets — so shoppers can pick up fresh, delicious, showstopping CRUMBS desserts alongside their groceries.”
The Colossal Cupcake can be found in stores like King Soopers, Kroger, QFC, Ralphs, Fry’s and more, with details on participating retailers available @originalcrumbs on social media.
