The Big Difference Between McDonald’s New Snack Wraps and Its Cult-Favorite Predecessor
We tried the returning item to see how it stacks up to the one we loved.

It’s hard to describe the specific kind of disappointment when a restaurant drops your favorite item from the menu. Sure, you might have other reasons to return, but you’ll never again be able to walk in and order “the usual.” Such was the case with McDonald’s customers who had grown fond of the chain’s Snack Wraps: breaded chicken tenders wrapped in a tortilla with shredded lettuce, ranch sauce and cheese.
The deceptively simple and relatively inexpensive burger alternative hit the sweet spot between light snack and full meal. But sadly, after being discontinued in 2020, for the past five years, that hole in the McDonald’s menu has been harder to fill … until this week. The Snack Wrap is officially back.
The Snack Wrap was first introduced to McDonald’s U.S. customers in 2006 (spurring honey mustard, salsa, and grilled chicken iterations) and remained on the chain’s menu nationwide until 2016 when it was made optional for franchisees. Snack Wraps were ultimately axed from all locations in 2020 as part of a major scaling back of the menu. The discontinuation sparked fervent fan campaigns on social media and via email to bring Snack Wraps back, and last year, the brand announced that Snack Wraps would finally be returning sometime in 2025.

That “sometime” turned out to be Thursday, July 10. As of right now, McDonald’s has put two snack wraps on the menu: The Ranch Snack Wrap and the Spicy Snack Wrap. Both feature a breaded chicken tender, shredded lettuce, shredded cheese and a soft flour tortilla. The Ranch version is sauced with ranch (of course), while the Spicy is slathered in the same habanero-infused sauce currently available on the Spicy McCrispy sandwich.
So how do the new Snack Wraps taste? We tried both and were immediately brought back to that mid-2000s, “how much money can my friends and I scrape together before we reach the drive thru” vibe. The Ranch Wrap is a satisfying, if predictably simple, recreation of the original ranch Snack Wrap. The Spicy Wrap is definitely spicy, with a flavorful but significant heat factor, and probably way bolder than anything most fast-food restaurants would have featured in 2006. It just goes to show how our collective craving for all things spicy has grown since then.
However, one of the main differences in the new Snack Wraps is the actual chicken tender. McDonald’s has previously offered chicken strips off and on over the past couple of decades, beginning with Chicken Selects in 1998 and most recently Buttermilk Crispy Tenders, which left the menu in 2020. And both of those items were previously featured as the chicken component in Snack Wraps.
Earlier this year, McDonald’s introduced a spinoff of its McCrispy Chicken Sandwiches in a new dippable form: McCrispy Strips. A brand representative confirmed to Food Network that the new Snack Wraps do indeed contain a McCrispy Strip, and that, while fan demand was a factor, having chicken strips back on the McDonald’s menu made the Snack Wrap’s return logistically possible.
But unlike the other new limited-time menu items hitting McDonald’s this week (the Spicy McMuffin is here to celebrate the iconic breakfast sandwich’s 50th anniversary), Snack Wraps are permanent additions to the McDonald’s menu. Of course, if McCrispy Strips go anywhere, it might be time to start drafting a “Bring Back Snack Wraps” letter to McDonald’s once again.
