What’s McDonald’s Big Announcement? The Chain Is Spicing up a Breakfast Menu Classic and Bringing Back a Cult Favorite

Sure, McDonald’s is mostly known for its burgers, nuggets and fries, but any true Mickey D’s fan leaves room in their heart for the chain’s breakfast menu, too. McDonald’s has served breakfast since the early 1970s, and perhaps its most iconic item, the Egg McMuffin, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its nationwide release this year. To celebrate, McDonald’s is giving this deceptively simple sandwich a spicy update.
As of July 8, McDonald’s locations across the United States are serving up the Spicy McMuffin. Like its classic Egg McMuffin namesake, the sandwich includes a slice of cheese, egg, Canadian bacon on a toasted and buttered English muffin. But kicking things up a notch is the addition of McDonald’s Spicy Pepper Sauce. (If you’ve ever ordered one of McDonald’s spicy chicken sandwiches, that sauce will be familiar.)
If you prefer your first meal of the day a little meatier, the Spicy Sausage McMuffin — with cheese, a sausage patty, and Spicy Pepper Sauce on an English muffin — is also hitting the menu, along with its eggy counterpart, the Spicy Sausage McMuffin with Egg. All three spiced up breakfast sandwiches will only be available for a limited time and at participating locations.

However, that’s not the only new item news hitting McDonald’s this week. Fervent fans of the discontinued Snack Wraps — which featured a breaded chicken strip, shredded lettuce, and cheese tucked into a flour tortilla — will be pleased to know that, starting July 10, two new Snack Wraps will be hitting McDonald’s locations nationwide. And unlike the Spicy McMuffins, this menu addition is permanent.
But back to breakfast. By 2015, McDonald’s breakfast had achieved enough popularity (or perhaps enough scorn from hotcakes-hungry customers arriving at 10:31 a.m.) that the brand started serving breakfast items all day. Unfortunately for late risers, that ended in 2020, so if you want to try the new Spicy McMuffin, you’ll have to roll up to McDonald’s during regular breakfast hours.
